Welcome to SIHDA: Women in the law of antiquity
The 79th International Congress of the Société Internationale Fernand de Visscher pour l’Histoire des Droits de l’Antiquité invites participants to engage in a broad and rigorous reflection on the presence, role, and legal representation of women in ancient societies. Under the title Women in the Law of Antiquity, the conference seeks to explore how law, history, tradition, and collective memory shaped the position of women across the ancient world.
Ancient sources—legal, literary, epigraphic, and historiographical—provide us with very valuable information about the presence of women in the society and law of antiquity. They also reveal the existence of tensions between normative constraints and the social and legal-economic integration and inclusion of women, which allowed the opening of spaces for female initiative and the elevation of certain female figures who became universal ideological models, fundamental for the construction of contemporary political and social identities.
Thematic Areas
We welcome papers addressing, among other topics:
The legal status of women in the different phases of ancient law
The historiographical and literary construction of paradigmatic female figures
The relationship between myth, memory, and political legitimization
The participation of women in family, economic, religious and civic life
Representations of gender in legal sources and their interpretation by ancient authors
Mechanisms of social and moral control linked to the female role
Case studies on real or symbolic women who influenced the formation of legal and social values.
In keeping with the open and participatory spirit of the SIHDA, papers on free topics—even if not directly related to the theme of the Congress—are also welcome. The diversity of perspectives and the breadth of subjects have always been hallmarks of our scholarly community.
